The prequel series of “Dexter” at Paramount+ with Showtime has announced its main cast members.

Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, and Molly Brown will play the lead roles in the show titled “Dexter: Original Sin.” Gibson is set to portray Dexter Morgan, while Slater will take on the role of Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father. Brown has been cast as Debra Morgan, Dexter’s sister. These characters were originally portrayed by Michael C. Hall, James Remar, and Jennifer Carpenter, respectively, in the original series.

The 10-episode prequel, announced in February 2023, is set in 1991, 15 years prior to the events of the original “Dexter.” The storyline follows Dexter (Gibson) as he evolves from being a student to a vengeful serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Slater), Dexter learns a Code to help him eliminate deserving targets without getting caught by law enforcement as he starts an internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Gibson’s TV works include “Shadow and Bone” and “The OA” on Netflix, as well as roles in movies like “Tolkien,” “Good Girl Jane,” and “Property of the State.”

Slater is known for his performances in films such as “True Romance,” “Interview with the Vampire,” and “Heathers,” and for winning a Golden Globe for “Mr. Robot.” His recent TV appearances include shows like “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Dr. Death,” and “Dirty John.”

Brown’s television credits encompass shows like “Billions,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Evil,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with notable film work in “Senior Year.”

Gibson is represented by Gersh, Curtis Brown Group, Range Media Partners, and Felker Toczek. Slater is represented by UTA. Brown is represented by Buchwald and Authentic Talent & Literary Management.

Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner and executive producer of “Dexter,” returns in the same capacity for “Original Sin.” Michael C. Hall is also an executive producer on the series, along with other key figures like Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Michael Lehmann, known for directing “Heathers,” serves as director and executive producer, while Robert Lloyd Lewis is a producer on the series. Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios are the production entities behind the show. Showtime Studios executives Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif oversee the production, with Tara Power handling production supervision. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

“Dexter” garnered critical acclaim during its original run, receiving accolades such as Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for best drama series. Michael C. Hall received several nominations for his role in the show, winning a Golden Globe in 2010. John Lithgow also earned prestigious awards for his guest role in the fourth season. Additionally, the series was honored with a Peabody Award in 2008.

The expansion of the “Dexter” franchise includes the 2021 sequel series “Dexter: New Blood,” which picks up after the original series finale. Both the prequel and sequel form part of the larger strategy by Paramount to build on their established franchises, with plans for additional spinoffs from shows like “Billions.”

In related news, Amazon is developing a “Nurse Jackie” sequel series with Edie Falco reprising her role, as reported exclusively by Variety, after the project was initially in progress at Showtime.
