1. Kinds of Kindness

It’s only been a few months since Yorgos Lanthimos’sPoor Thingswas released, but the Greek director has already finished another film – or, in a way, three other films.
Kinds of Kindness is a triptych of blackly comic short stories, each of them set in an uncanny version of the present-day US, and each of them featuring the same actors in different roles: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie. Co-written by Efthimis Filippou, who scripted Lanthimos’s early films, it’s a return to his starkly creepy, but often hilarious roots. “It’s a quizzical concoction bound to baffle and delight in equal measure, structured so it feels like binge-watching three episodes of a nihilist Twilight Zone knock-off,”says Peter DeBruge in Variety. “This long, scaldingly original film enthralls even as it frustrates, defying conventional logic while presenting an absurdist riff on modern society.”

2. I Am: Céline Dion

Anyone who remembers the release of Titanic in 1997 will remember its theme song, My Heart Will Go On by Céline Dion. The power ballad was an Oscar and Grammy winner that became the biggest-selling single of 1998 – and it was just one of Dion’s hits. More recently, though, she has been living with a rare neurological disorder,
Stiff-Person Syndrome, which causes muscle stiffness and spasms, and has prevented her from performing. Irene Taylor’s documentary shows how she has coped. “This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me,”
Dion said in a statement. “As the road to resuming my performing career continues… I decided I wanted to document this part of my life to help others who share this diagnosis.”

5. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Rory O’Connor from The Film Stage describes Horizon as a classic Western presented in a deliberate manner through a limited series format, with a scope as vast as the open sky.

The movie will be available for the general public from June 28th.

6. Bad Boys: Ride or Die
Will Smith makes his return to the big screen in the fourth installment of the Miami cop franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die. After nearly three decades since the original Bad Boys film, Smith emphasizes that this sequel goes beyond a mere continuation of the series. He aims for the movie to have a substantial impact and depth. Smith expressed to Empire magazine that they are taking creative risks with this film, pushing boundaries with the characters’ life experiences and age. He mentioned, “There’s a spiritual aspect to it.”

This movie is set to be released on June 5th.

7. Treasure
Treasure, a film directed by Julia von Heinz, explores the Holocaust in a unique way by incorporating whimsical elements and personal anecdotes rather than relying on shocking imagery. The film follows Lena Dunham’s character, a music journalist, on a road trip through Poland with her father, played by Stephen Fry, a survivor of Auschwitz. Although the film delves into dark themes, it manages to maintain an engaging and relatable narrative. Treasure offers a different perspective on dealing with the historical trauma of the Holocaust.

The movie was released in the US on June 14th.

“The Watchers” features Dakota Fanning in a supernatural mystery thriller where she portrays an artist who becomes lost in an Irish forest. While being pursued by a monster, she seeks shelter in a bunker with three strangers, leading to unexpected revelations about each of them.In a thrilling story inspired by the novel by AM Shine, The Watchers (known as The Watched in the UK and Ireland) paints a mysterious picture resembling an M. Night Shyamalan film. Interestingly, the movie was written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of the renowned filmmaker. Drawing from her upbringing, Ishana shared in an interview with Collider that she observed her father’s filmmaking techniques closely for over two decades, learning and reflecting on his emotional journey through the process.

“The Bikeriders” features a stellar cast, including Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, and Mike Faist, in a gripping tale set in 1960s Chicago. As the story unfolds, conflicts arise within the Vandals MC, a motorcycle club led by Johnny (played by Hardy), ultimately delving into the realm of organized crime. Jeff Nichols’ film offers a captivating narrative reminiscent of classic mob films like Goodfellas, as described by Brian Viner in the Daily Mail.

Scheduled for release on June 21 in several countries, “A Quiet Place: Day One” serves as a prequel to the original movie, shedding light on the chaos unleashed by extraterrestrial beings in New York City. Led by Lupita Nyong’o and Djimon Hounsou, who reprises his role from the sequel, the film explores the human struggle against the unknown, a theme that director Michael Sarnoski aimed to emphasize in a unique manner as mentioned in Entertainment Weekly.

“Banel & Adama” is a captivating debut film by Ramata-Toulaye Sy that revolves around two young lovers.
