NASCAR Introduces Electric Prototype without Racing Plans
NASCAR has recently showcased its electric prototype known as the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype at the Chicago street race event. Despite this unveiling, there are no concrete plans to incorporate it into any national series in the near future, or possibly ever.
The ABB NASCAR EV Prototype is a product of NASCAR’s collaboration with ABB, Formula E’s title partner and the first official partner of its “NASCAR Impact” initiative. This prototype represents NASCAR’s dedication to highlighting new electrification technologies while emphasizing that the development of this EV Prototype does not signify a departure from combustion engines.
NASCAR’s Senior Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer, John Probst, emphasized that the current focus remains on combustion engines. Probst stated that while there have been significant advancements in sustainable fuel and hydrogen, as well as the implementation of hybrid technologies in other racing series, the introduction of battery electric vehicles in NASCAR does not imply an immediate commitment to a new racing series.
The EV Prototype was a collaborative effort involving NASCAR’s OEM partners – Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. It was constructed by the same engineers responsible for the creation of the current Next Gen car used in the Cup Series and the Garage 56 entry from last year’s Le Mans 24 Hours.
The electric stock car, which has been tested on the track with former Cup driver David Ragan as its primary driver, features three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors powering the bespoke Goodyear tires. With a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery and regenerative braking capabilities, the car can generate 1,000 kW at peak power, making it suitable for road courses and short oval tracks.
The all-wheel-drive vehicle boasts a sustainable flax-based composite crossover utility vehicle body on a modified Next Gen car chassis. Key components such as steering, suspension, brakes, and wheels are derived from the current Cup car.
Probst emphasized that the purpose of the EV Prototype is to explore potential future directions for NASCAR. He highlighted the importance of learning from this initiative and being adaptable to where the future may lead.
The creation of an all-electric racing vehicle opens up possibilities for NASCAR and manufacturers to explore new ideas that were previously considered far-fetched. Probst views this as an opportunity for NASCAR and manufacturers to assess different avenues in the rapidly evolving landscape of powertrains.
“NASCAR Impact” represents NASCAR’s commitment to achieving zero carbon emissions across its core operations by 2035. This initiative includes plans to transition to 100% renewable electricity at owned race tracks and facilities by 2028, expand waste diversion efforts, and install on-site EV charging stations.
