Bob Newhart, the renowned American stand-up comedian known for his deadpan style, has died at 94.
The star of The Bob Newhart Show TV series, Newhart passed away at his home after battling a series of short illnesses, according to his publicist’s statement to the BBC.
Newhart began his career as an accountant in Chicago before transitioning into stand-up comedy. He became a frequent guest host on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, hosting 87 times.
In recent years, he appeared in popular films like Elf and TV series such as The Big Bang Theory.
Born in a suburb of Chicago, Newhart graduated from Loyola University with a business degree in 1952. He served in the Army during the Korean War before pursuing a brief stint in graduate law school.
Newhart gained recognition for his comedy routines, which led to a successful career in stand-up. His album, “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart,” was the first comedy album to top the charts.
Known for his unique storytelling style and observational humor, Newhart was admired for his modern approach and non-confrontational delivery on stage.
Throughout his career, Newhart continued to entertain audiences, maintaining a presence in Hollywood well into his 80s.
