A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 hit near the coast of Chiapas in Mexico on Sunday morning, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 75 km (46.6 miles) according to the USGS.

Mexico’s national civil protection agency indicated through social media that they are closely monitoring the situation and as of now, there have been no reports of damage.

In Guatemala, the effects of the earthquake were felt in the capital city of Guatemala City. The country’s disaster agency CONRED reported structural damage in the departments of Quetzaltenango and San Marcos, close to the border with Mexico. The agency also mentioned a landslide that obstructed a part of a road.

Both the US Tsunami Warning System and Mexico’s navy have confirmed that there is no threat of a tsunami following the earthquake.
