As the 2024 Trade Deadline quickly approaches, here is a comprehensive guide for you.
What is the schedule for the MLB Trade Deadline?
• The MLB Trade Deadline for 2024 is set for July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
• Previously, the Deadline was consistently on July 31 at 4 p.m. ET. Currently, the Commissioner’s Office has the flexibility to choose a date between July 28 and Aug. 3 to prevent conflicts with games.
What does the MLB Trade Deadline mean?
• The Trade Deadline marks the final opportunity during the season for players on 40-man rosters to be traded from one team to another. Even though players can still be placed and claimed on outright waivers, trading is no longer allowed after July 30 at 6 p.m. ET. Before 2019, July 31 was known as the non-waiver Trade Deadline, and players could be traded only after passing through revocable trade waivers. The August waiver trade period was removed in 2019, with MLB transitioning to a single Deadline.
• Minor League players not on 40-man rosters can be traded post-Deadline. However, any player must be in an organization by the end of Aug. 31, regardless of being on the 40-man roster, to be eligible for the postseason with that team.
