Courteney Cox shared the surprising moment when her fiancé Johnny McDaid unexpectedly ended their relationship in the middle of a therapy session.

In an episode of the “Minnie Questions” podcast released on Wednesday, Cox reflected on the emotional incident, describing it as a challenging but ultimately relationship-defining experience.

“Our breakup happened during therapy. I was completely taken aback,” said Cox, who began dating the “Snow Patrol” musician in 2013 after an introduction by mutual acquaintance Ed Sheeran.

“I was dumbfounded,” she disclosed. “I was in immense shock and pain. I dislike surprises, but Johnny is a wonderful person, and his intention wasn’t to shock me. He was also experiencing significant pain in the relationship.”

“There were unresolved issues that he felt the need to handle to protect himself emotionally,” she explained. “Rather than reacting angrily or negatively, I chose to confront those issues and focused on my personal growth.”

“I am grateful for that breakup because it led to a renewed relationship that was more evolved, and it helped me understand my role in the world… which aspects from my past needed resolution,” she shared on the podcast. “It allowed me to rediscover my voice, set boundaries, understand my motivations in life—essentially, it helped me understand myself better.”

Cox and McDaid have been romantically involved since 2013 and got engaged in 2014. Although they announced the end of their engagement in 2019, they remained in a relationship.

Last year, the pair celebrated a significant milestone: their 10-year anniversary.
