Stephanopoulos’ absence last week was likely a result of the passing of his father, Rev. Dr. Robert G. Stephanopoulos, who sadly passed away on June 19 at the age of 89. The news of his father’s demise was shared by Stephanopoulos’ wife, Ali Wentworth. Wentworth expressed, “Reverend Robert George Stephanopoulos, PhD, Dean Emeritus Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity passed away on June 19th. He was my father-in-law and I loved him dearly,” alongside several black-and-white photos from her and Stephanopoulos’ wedding.
The GMA co-host has not addressed his father’s passing on the show or on social media but took some time off following the reverend’s death. Stephanopoulos returned to the show on June 24 as the sole anchor present. While the whereabouts of Michael Strahan remain unknown, Robin Roberts has been out of the country since last week, reporting live from Portugal for GMA regarding the surge of Americans relocating and traveling to the nation, accompanied by her wife, Amber Laign. During his absence, Stephanopoulos was joined by Gio Benitez, Rebecca Jarvis and Linsey Davis.
Shortly after Stephanopoulos’ return to the show, all three anchors were unavailable and substituted by Benitez, Jarvis, and Davis. Stephanopoulos has not shared any details about his absence or his whereabouts, but fans speculate that he may be attending his father’s funeral or spending time with his family.
He has been occupied with promoting his bestselling book, The Situation Room, in recent months, possibly requiring attendance at another promotional event. His most recent appearance was at the Springfield Public Forum on June 6 in Massachusetts, his home state. During the forum, the former senior advisor to President Clinton delved into his book’s content and discussed some of the challenges he encountered while working in the White House. “Thank you @springfeildpublicforum and @hoophall for having me to talk about #TheSituationRoom!” he shared on Instagram.
Stephanopoulos commenced his political career and played a pivotal role in Clinton’s 1992 U.S. presidential campaign. He later served as a senior advisor for policy and strategy before stepping down from the Clinton administration in 1996, shortly after the former president’s re-election. Following his White House tenure, Stephanopoulos took on the role of a political analyst for ABC News and a correspondent for This Week. In 2009, he assumed the position of co-anchor for Good Morning America, succeeding Diane Sawyer. Under the partnership of Stephanopoulos and Roberts, Good Morning America has flourished, becoming the leading morning talk show, surpassing NBC’s Today, which held the top spot for 16 years.
