A student from Co Armagh is about to embark on an extraordinary opportunity as he secures a spot at the renowned United Space School in Houston, Texas.
Lurgan resident Lee Johnston, a student at Southern Regional College, will be immersing himself in the authentic NASA experience after earning a prestigious place in the program.
The 18-year-old Year 1 Applied Science student will be part of a team comprising students from various countries studying at the University of Clear Lake, situated adjacent to the NASA Johnson Space Centre.
The United Space School initiative was founded by the Foundation for International Space Education (FISE), with a goal to provide space-based education to pre-university students worldwide, offering them an introduction and orientation to the aerospace industry.
Lee expresses his enthusiasm for the opportunity to visit Houston, a destination that has long been on his ‘bucket list’.
He is especially eager to delve into the intricacies of Mars, having conducted research projects on the planet during his college course.
“Space has always been a significant interest of mine since I was young,” he mentioned.
“My grandfather and I used to use his telescope to gaze at the stars, along with his partner, Eve. We would spend hours every weekend observing the night sky and discussing space.
“I am particularly keen on expanding my knowledge about Mars during my time there.”
Lee aspires to work at the European Space Agency in the future, viewing this experience as a tremendous asset in pursuing a career in astrophysics.
Laura Martin, SRC Curriculum Area Manager, Faculty of Health and Science, described this as a “fantastic opportunity” for the young man.
Lee’s journey to Houston to attend the United Space School is scheduled for July 14.
