Kathie Lee Gifford Recalls Finding Forgiveness for Late Husband Frank After Affair

Kathie Lee Gifford is reflecting on heartbreak and forgiveness. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, April 24, the former TODAY anchor, 70, discussed one of the most difficult topics of her new book, “I Want to Matter: Your Life Is Too Short and Too Precious to Waste,” which is out on Tuesday, April 30.

Though it’s been nearly a decade since her late husband Frank Gifford’s 2015 death, his infidelity during their marriage still brings her painful memories. “My faith was definitely tested the most during the whole year dealing with Frank’s infidelity because I thought that I had finally found my soulmate,” Kathie Lee said in an interview.

She and Frank tied the knot in 1986, and welcomed son Cody in 1990 and daughter Cassidy in 1993. The former New York Giants athlete’s extramarital affair with former flight attendant Suzen Johnson happened in 1997 and was exposed by a tabloid.

In an extended version of the conversation shared on ET’s website, she explained her perspective on forgiveness and not letting bitterness take hold. She emphasized the importance of choosing to be a blessing in life.

Kathie Lee also opened up about knowing when to walk away, not only from romantic relationships but also from career opportunities. She highlighted the role of intuition and prayer in her decision-making process.

In her 2020 memoir, “It’s Never Too Late: Make the Next Act of Your Life the Best Act of Your Life,” Kathie Lee candidly spoke about the pain caused by Frank’s affair. Despite the difficult times, she found wisdom and growth in looking back and hoped to share her experiences to help others.

The journey wasn’t easy, as Kathie Lee also battled deep depression during this period. However, she cherished the good memories of Frank as a kind, gentle, and generous man, acknowledging that the people we love the most can sometimes hurt us the deepest.
