The Kentucky Oaks race, where female horses compete, takes place annually at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. As the event reaches its 150th year, here are the essential details to know before the fillies hit the track on May 3:

The Horses

This race showcases 3-year-old horses and is a prestigious $1.5 Million Grade 1 stakes race, awarding the winning filly with a garland of lilies. The 14 horses lined up for the race are:

  4. Thorpedo Anna (5-1)

Pink is the theme for Oaks, in honor of the official flower of the event, the stargazer lily, and to support breast and ovarian cancer advocacy. While not mandatory, incorporating pink into your outfit is recommended. Donning pink might earn you extra points in the fashion contest after the race!

Survivor’s Parade

Before the Oaks race starts, there is a special Survivors Parade to celebrate breast and ovarian cancer survivors. This year, 150 survivors will walk, commencing around 3:15 p.m.


On-site parking at Oaks is fully booked, but other parking options are still available. You can attempt to find parking on nearby streets or pay lots. Taxi or rideshare pick-up and drop-off will be at the Bronze Lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.
