Netflix is collaborating on an animated series inspired by the immensely popular sandbox game “Minecraft” along with Mojang Studios, the Swedish creators of the game.
Specific plot details are yet to be revealed, but Netflix stated that the series “will feature a fresh storyline with new characters, providing a new perspective on the world of ‘Minecraft’.”
The CG-animated series is being developed in partnership with WildBrain, the Canadian animation studio responsible for Netflix shows like “Sonic Prime,” “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” and “Carmen Sandiego.” Recently, Netflix premiered WildBrain’s reboot of “Johnny Test,” which originally aired from 2005 to 2014 on channels such as the WB and Cartoon Network. WildBrain has also worked on “The Snoopy Show” and “Snoopy in Space” for Apple TV+ and “Fireman Sam” for Channel 5 in the UK.
The game “Minecraft” was introduced by Mojang in 2011, allowing players to construct 3D environments using vibrant blocks in its distinctive pixelated style. Over 140 million individuals engage in “Minecraft” each month, leading to offshoots like “Minecraft: Story Mode,” “Minecraft Earth,” “Minecraft Dungeons,” and “Minecraft Legends.”
Mojang is concurrently working on another narrative adaptation of “Minecraft.” A movie project backed by Warner Bros. and Legendary features stars like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers, with Jared Hess directing. The film is scheduled to debut on April 4, 2025.
The announcement of the Netflix series coincided with Mojang’s celebration of the original “Minecraft” game’s 15th anniversary.
