Spain midfielder Pedri had to leave the field early in his team’s Euro quarter-final match due to a left knee injury.

Pedri, who is 21 years old, was tackled heavily by Germany’s Toni Kroos in the first five minutes of the game in Stuttgart. The Barcelona player needed medical attention on the pitch and was replaced by Dani Olmo in the eighth minute.

Pedri looked upset as he exited the field, and at halftime, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) reported that their medical staff was assessing an internal-lateral sprain in his left knee.

The day after Spain’s quarter-final victory, the RFEF announced that Pedri had suffered a “grade 2 internal lateral sprain in his left knee.” Despite the injury, he will stay with the team for the remainder of the Euros.

Toni Kroos, who plans to retire after the Euros, did not receive a yellow card from referee Anthony Taylor for the challenge on Pedri. Spanish fans on social media immediately questioned why Kroos was not cautioned, with some even calling for him to be sent off.

Pedri’s playing time has been carefully managed by Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente during the Euros. He played 59 minutes in the first match against Croatia, 71 minutes against Italy, was rested in the game against Albania, and played 52 minutes in the 4-1 win over Georgia.

On the other hand, Dani Olmo has performed well in the tournament despite limited playing time, contributing an assist in the victory against Albania and scoring as a substitute against Georgia.

Following a 2-1 victory against Germany, with a crucial extra-time goal from Mikel Merino, Spain will now face France in the Euro 2024 semi-final. The match is scheduled to take place at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena on Tuesday, July 9.
