I have played The First Descendant in various beta versions and am still unsure if it stands out among other sci-fi shooters or is just another similar game seeking attention. After investing over 45 hours in a pre-launch preview, I am still uncertain if it will become my next favorite looter-shooter or fall short. The game offers engaging multiplayer gameplay with cool characters, but its UI can be complex, and its monetization model can be off-putting. The game’s combat and RPG elements are enjoyable, but the story and dialogue leave much to be desired, filled with cliches and filler content.
The game offers engaging combat and boss battles, but is marred by repetitive tasks and filler content that can make the experience dull. The storyline is filled with over-the-top sci-fi jargon and questionable dialogue, making it hard to take seriously. However, the playable characters show promise, each with unique abilities and playstyles that add variety to the gameplay.
The missions involving mundane tasks can detract from the game’s otherwise enjoyable combat mechanics. The characters offer some depth, though additional character development would enhance the overall experience. The variety in playable characters and their distinct playstyles make switching between them a refreshing change of pace. The game’s loot system is robust, offering plenty of gear customization options, but navigating through the various upgrade systems can be overwhelming at times.
Despite its flaws, The First Descendant shows potential with engaging gameplay and diverse character options. While the game has its issues, it manages to deliver a premium experience in the free-to-play space. I look forward to exploring more of the game and providing a final review upon its official release.
