Uruguay’s aggressive early play paid off when Núñez scored in the seventh minute after a scramble following a cross from Nahitan Nández. Mexico had a brief moment of hope when Roberto Alvarado’s strike hit the crossbar in the 13th minute, but Uruguay continued to apply pressure.
Uruguay extended their lead in the 26th minute when Brian Rodríguez set up Facundo Pellistri for a close-range finish. Núñez then added his second goal in the 44th minute after a swift counter-attack with Maximiliano Araujo.
After the break, Núñez completed his hat-trick in the 49th minute, tapping in a cross from Pellistri. Despite attempts to change their fortunes by Mexico, they were unable to break Uruguay’s dominance.
The match was briefly halted in the 54th minute due to homophobic chants from the Mexican fans. Despite Mexico’s efforts, they couldn’t find a breakthrough, with Uruguay securing a 4-0 win. Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa praised his team’s performance, highlighting their effectiveness in capitalizing on counterattacks.
After this result, Uruguay will continue their preparations for the upcoming Copa América, while Mexico will face Brazil in another friendly as they gear up for the tournament. Both teams will be looking to make an impact in the Copa América, which kicks off on June 20.
